The CES Letter

To Truth Seekers

In early 2012, a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, who presented himself as a truth-seeker and fully believing returned missionary, came across an online article discussing members leaving the Church over historical issues. This led to what he claimed was a year-long investigation into Church history, particularly Joseph Smith. By April 2013, he had supposedly written a letter to a CES director, seeking answers to his questions. However, instead of privately seeking resolution, he published the letter online, where it quickly gained traction as the "CES Letter."

Despite his claims of being a sincere truth-seeker, his actions suggest otherwise. Our project, "The CES Letters," responds to his letter with letters from scholars and historians who address these issues thoughtfully and faithfully. Accompanied by podcast interviews to offer additional context and insights, we seek to discover what we know and how we know it. Join us as we seek learning by study and by faith. New podcast episodes published each Tuesday.

"When I was in the process of rebuilding my faith, I remember listening to a talk about how Joseph was led to seek the God of love as he pondered the 'tumult of opinions' amongst Arminians, Calvinists, and Universalists. That talk helped me on my own journey back to the God of love."
